For anyone building a shed, a delivery process that suits your schedule rather than the supplier’s plays a crucial part in getting your project off on the right foot.
Some shed companies take the approach of dropping off the whole kit at your site in one go. They seem to think that once you’ve signed the deal, you’re ready to build. Naturally if you’d like to get your kit all in one go, just let us know and we’ll gladly deliver it that way. But remember, once everything is in your possession, it’s your responsibility. Months of weather isn’t good for poles or iron components, and there’s no comeback if things go awry.
First up, chances are that there’s a heap of site preparation needing to be done before you even think about starting to build, like clearing trees, stump grinding and levelling the site, drainage, power, maybe even soil samples and council paperwork. There can be (and often are) hold-ups along the way, because different tradesmen are involved.
You can reasonably expect even longer delays if council paperwork needs completion and approval – councils tend to work to their schedule, not yours, and not all councils have the same regulations and procedures. You might come across council requirements so complicated and time-consuming that you need to have the services of someone to guide you through the process. While all this is going on, your kit is bearing the brunt of whatever the weather throws at it.
Once your poles are set in place, it’s time to pour the concrete slab if you’re going to use one. There’s another wait – concrete has to cure for between 7 to 14 days before building work begins, and it also has to be cut to avoid cracking in the future.
Concrete curing aside, there are several things that can happen which will all slow down your build. Other hold-ups we know of firsthand include:
- Builder fell off ladder and broke his arm
- Builder had fall out with his team and they walked off site
- Double-booked tradies didn’t turn up, whole process got help up
- Concrete contractor proved unreliable, took a fortnight to find another one
- Council came up with new regulations regarding flooding
